What term should whites within a traditionally gender binary culture, who do not identify with either, use? I completely agree with all comments about the three spirit issue but "third gender" always struck me as culturally neutral. And I feel it's important for those outside the typical construct to identify with something and give it a name and a place in the current binary cultures to break down the 2 gender idea.

shitrichcollegekidssay:

Well, if you read what we have on this blog on ‘third gender’ as an identifying term, you know that your feelings are irrelevant. Non-binary (NB, enbys) is an available term. Like PoC always have, white communities can also construct their own terms.

The gender binary as we know it today and its smothering universality (and the sexism/misogyny, patriarchy, and binarism that came along with it) are all a result of white culture: white supremacy.

Through colonialism and imperialism, many of our own ways have been lost, while for others the context for the option to have the very discourse you want, within their own cultures, was destroyed.

The inescapable truth is white identities will always be that much more accessible, navigable, understood, because they are working from a White gender binary. PoC do not have the privilege of discussing, determining, and understanding their genders outside of a hegemonic Western/white binary that divorced them from their traditions, cultures, and ancestors.

So in conclusion, no, ‘third gender’ is not for you or any white person, when it historically and currently is being used to enact violence against us.

This is important

“Equality means everyone gets exactly the same outcome without regard to individual differences, which, in turn, ignores various starting points on the socioeconomic ladder due to circumstance or institutions like white supremacy and patriarchy. Equity, on the other hand, means everyone gets the same quality of outcome, and therefore it requires proactively rectifying issues of circumstance and institutionalized inequality in the manner, as Marx might say, from each according to their ability, to each according to their need.”

I need to remember this for uniforms.

Oh my god, I am learning this ASAP. HOW DID I NOT KNOW OF THIS BEFORE?!
